Open access: between melancholy and futuralgia

Open access is now a reality for a large number of publications. However, the way in which it is getting stronger may be failing to meet the expectations of the scientific community. So-called ‘transformative agreements’ perpetuate the existing publishing model and pass on publication costs to those institutions that can afford them. The green and diamond routes are viable alternatives, but they rely on dispersed infrastructures locally maintained. Generative Artificial Intelligence reuses open access research to produce content, yet respect to its terms of use remains unclear. Research assessment, although it has begun to reorient its principles, still needs to make progress in qualitative analysis.
