Distribution of R&D Projects in Spain in 2025. Call for Knowledge Generation Projects (provisional decision for 2025)

Abstract

This study analyses the provisional resolution of the 2025 Knowledge Generation Projects call. The analysis is based on the complete list of submitted applications. Of the 7,788 project proposals submitted, 3,422 were funded (43.9%), for a total amount of €542,021,004, in addition to 1,156 predoctoral research contracts (FPI). Universities account for 70.0% of all funded projects, with public universities receiving 95.0% of those awarded to the university sector. The universities of Barcelona, Complutense University of Madrid, Granada, Seville, and the Autonomous University of Madrid lead the ranking in terms of the number of funded projects. By research area, Biomedicine and Environmental Sciences and Technologies receive the largest shares of funding, whereas Education and Law remain among the least-funded fields. A specific analysis of the Communication field reveals a highly competitive call, with a success rate of 26.7%, and no single institution consolidating a clear leadership position compared with the previous year. Using 2025 data, this study continues the methodological approach employed in the analysis of the 2023 call published in Anuario ThinkEPI (Repiso et al., 2024).
