Abstract

This paper presents a functional analysis of Scholar Labs, the still-in-beta artificial intelligence tool integrated into Google Scholar. Its search interface is examined to clarify its functions and identify the resources offered to final users. To this end, the tool is tested by applying a series of prompts that describe its behavior and assess its effectiveness on the first day of operation. Despite current limitations and the tool’s foreseeable evolution, two major opportunities for the scientific community are evident: new ways to interact with Google Scholar for retrieving academic documents and new challenges for increasing the visibility of our scientific output.
